You may be experiencing signs of swollen feet, arch pains, ingrowing toenails or even a change in the size of your feet. If you’re wondering what this has to do with pregnancy then we’re here to answer your questions!
Swollen Feet
It’s common to notice swollen feet roughly around the fifth month of your pregnancy. This is due to an increased volume of blood and fluids in your body and a decrease in circulation. Although mild foot swelling is normal, sudden swelling can be painful and could be an indication of a blood clot.
Podiatry Advice: We recommend reducing your intake of caffeine, increasing your water intake and elevating your feet.
Arch Pain
Pain in your arches can be a sign of a flattened foot arch. This is caused due to increased weight over your pregnancy which puts stress on the feet and flattens the arches.
Podiatry Advice: We recommend stretching your feet every morning as well as after any physical activity and wearing footwear that provides good arch support.
Ingrown toenails
Having a pregnant belly can stop you from cutting your toenails properly and with the swelling of your feet you may find that your toenails are rubbing against your toes causing additional stress.
Podiatry Advice: We recommend wearing shoes that fit correctly and aren’t too tight. Do not self-treat your ingrown toenail but instead come and say hi to us at Absolute Foot Care, we can treat you at your own home!
Change in Foot Size
Whilst pregnant you may experience expanding feet, you might need to go up a shoe size (or half) to accommodate your changing feet. Do not try to squeeze your feet into poorly fitting shoes as it could lead to bunions and ingrown toenails.
Podiatry Advice: Get yourself a pair of shoes that fit properly and feel comfortable. Most women go back to their pre-pregnancy shoe size after the birth of their baby.
