Here at Absolute Foot Care we’ve been identifying and treating foot cracks and fissures for over 20 + years in Wolverhampton, Stafford and Shropshire so in today’s article we’ll be breaking down the symptoms and methods in which we can help!
What is a skin fissure?
You may have cracks and fissures on your finger tips, between your toes or on the heels of your feet and this uncomfortable pain has been caused by intense dryness and thickened skin.
First you will notice dry skin on your feet.
The skin can thicken and may discolour.
Tiny cracks start to form in the skin.
Untreated, the cracks can enlarge and become fissures.
Skin fissures can be superficial or deep. If you have a superficial fissure you will experience small cracks which do not penetrate the deeper layers of skin, however if you have a deep fissure further layers of skin may be penetrated causing bleeding and pain.
Identifying the symptoms of your cracks and fissures
In the affected area (typically your heel), we will be looking for:
Breaks in the skin that look like cuts or cracks
Thick or callus skin
Dry skin
Brown or yellow discoloured skin
Bleeding
Heel fissures can be especially harmful if you have diabetes because they can lead to non healing foot ulcers. At Absolute Foot Care we will always discuss your symptoms and activity as it relates to your condition.
How to treat your skin fissures
We will professionally administer an intensive moisturising cream to help soothe and care for your feet. From there we can debride any hard skin around the crack to enable the skin to be flexible and soft in order to aid the repair.
We may recommend heel cups to help support the heel and relieve you from any pressures providing your feet the opportunity to heal. We will likely implement a combination of treatments specifically tailored to the severity of your case.
Summary
We recommend treating your skin fissures promptly in order to prevent additional infections or ulcers from occurring.
